Kristján Davíðsson - The Artist of the Year at Friends of the Printmakers Association 2009

Kristján Davíðsson is the artist of the year at the friends of the association. He was born 1917 in Reykjavik, Iceland and lives there as well. Kristján Davíðsson’s abstract paintings give the impression of having developed according to the laws of nature. In his latest works, his colours have been reduced to earthy brown, white and a luminous blue. His poetic paintings, which display an exquisite sense of composition, contain a kind of twiggy figures which float over the canvas, magical, like fire flies in the night. The lithograph displays time and speed and printed on 170 g Hahnemuhle paper size 20x33,5 cm.

40th Anniversary

The Icelandic Printmakers Association celebrates its 40th anniversary this year and has on this occasion participated in many different events and will do so throughout the year. We have already taken an active part in The Reykjavík Art Festival where we held an event or a printmaking market, Art in the Making at Lækjartorg, 23rd of May where we introduced the activities along with art works by 30 members. We were both showing our art works as well as creating new by using the association’s presses and at 3 pm that same day there was a live printmaking performance where some of the members took/made a 25 metre long print of the pavement at Lækjatorg Square with a hand roller. Furthermore the Association held a retrospective exhibition of Kjartan Guðjónsson art works but he is the only living founding member of the association.
Beside participating in Reykjavík Art Festival the association has for a few years now taken part in Reykjavik Winter Festival where we introduce the artist of the year for the Friends of the Association (Grafíkvinir). The artist of 2009 was Kristján Davíðsson (b.1917) one of the oldest living artist in Iceland. His print is a lithograph on 170 g Hahnemuhle paper size 20 x 33,5 cm where he describes the speed and time.
The association will have hold the 40th anniversary exhibition at the Nordic House 7th of November to 5th of December. There will also be a historical exhibition in the main gallery at the same time. There will also be a conference held in collaboration with the National Museum of Iceland and the Printers Association this will be announced later.
